Description

The ULLA Shirt is a simple brioche sweater with a boat neckline, slightly shortened sleeves, and a straight, cropped fit.

It was inspired by shirts in the style of the 1960s.

Description

The model is worked top-down in one piece by casting on the stitches for the entire back piece including the sleeves. The neckline and shoulder area are shaped using extended rows (German short rows) and then worked straight down to the armholes.

The stitches for the front piece are picked up from the back piece and worked (almost) mirrored. Afterwards, the sleeves are joined together at the underside, and the body is finished in the round. No sewing is required.

The neckline is finished at the end, either by crocheting around it or binding off elastically, depending on preference.

The detailed 14-page pattern is written step by step. For the extended rows in both the front and back pieces, technical charts are included to help track the turning points.

Some knitting techniques are additionally demonstrated in videos. These are not part of the pattern itself; a collection of links can be found under “Knitting Techniques.”

A comprehensive schematic with all measurements makes it easy to adjust sizing. A blank schematic is also included for conversions or notes.

TIP: It may be helpful to already use a loop cast-on when knitting your gauge swatch in order to test the later elastic bind-off or crocheted neckline finish. You can also practice the elastic bind-off for the hem instead of binding off your swatch normally.

KNITTING TECHNIQUES

For this model, the stitches for the entire width of the shirt (sleeves, shoulders, and neckline) are cast on at once. Shortening the sleeves later is not possible!

Make sure that your loop cast-on is not too loose; if necessary, use a needle size ½–1 size smaller.

The neckline is finished at the end, allowing you to influence the final width of the shirt depending on the finishing technique you choose.

If the sleeves stretch out over time, you can work a slip stitch crochet row along the inner shoulder-sleeve seam to add more stability to the sleeve and shoulder area.
